Scrolls – Terms of Service
Last updated: 27 October 2026
1. About us and these Terms
1.1 We are The Founders Ltd, trading as Scrolls ("Scrolls", "we", "us", "our"), a company registered in England and Wales (company number 17035648), with our registered office at 22 Villiers Gardens, London, E20 1GW, United Kingdom.
1.2 These Terms of Service ("Terms") apply to the Scrolls mobile app (the "App"), our website thescrollsapp.com (the "Site") and any related services (together, the "Services").
1.3 By creating an account or using the Services, you agree to these Terms. If you do not agree, please do not use the Services.
1.4 Our Privacy Policy (thescrollsapp.com/privacy.html) explains how we use your personal data and forms part of these Terms.
1.5 Authors and publishers who distribute their work through Scrolls are also bound by their Author Distribution Agreement.
1.6 You can contact us at support@thefoundersgroup.co.uk.
2. Who can use Scrolls
2.1 You must be at least 13 years old to create a Scrolls account. When you create an account, we ask for your birth month and year.
2.2 If you are under 18, you confirm that a parent or guardian has agreed to you using Scrolls and to any purchases you make.
2.3 Users under 13 cannot create an account at present. If we learn that someone under 13 has an account, we will close it and delete their data.
3. Your account
3.1 You can create an account using Sign in with Apple or Sign in with Google. Your account is personal to you and must not be shared.
3.2 You must give accurate information and keep your sign-in details secure. You are responsible for activity on your account.
3.3 We may change or remove a username that is offensive, misleading or impersonates someone else.
3.4 You can delete your account at any time in the App (Settings > Delete account). You can choose recoverable deletion, which lets you recover your account by signing in again within 30 days, after which it is permanently deleted automatically; or permanent deletion straight away. Our Delete your account page explains how this works, and section 7 of our Privacy Policy explains what we keep.
4. Our content
4.1 Books and other content on Scrolls come from three sources: works in the public domain; titles licensed to us by authors, publishers and other rights holders; and original titles published through Scrolls.
4.2 Each title shows how you can access it before you start reading: free, by subscription (if offered), by one-off purchase, or either. Where you do not have access, we may show a free sample, usually the first chapter.
4.3 Our catalogue changes over time, for example when a rights holder withdraws a title. If a title you bought is withdrawn, we will try to keep it available in your library. If we cannot, we will offer you a refund or a replacement title of equal value.
4.4 Some features use third-party content and services, such as dictionary definitions and poems (see section 14). We show attribution in the App where required.
5. Subscriptions
5.1 We may offer subscriptions that give access to extra features or titles. Our current subscription is called Scrolls Library; its price, billing period, any free trial and the titles included are shown in the App before you subscribe. Prices include any VAT or sales tax and are shown in your local currency.
5.2 Free trials. Where we offer a free trial, we will show its length and the price that applies afterwards before you start. Your subscription starts automatically at the end of the trial unless you cancel before it ends.
5.3 Renewal. Subscriptions renew automatically at the end of each billing period until you cancel.
5.4 Cancelling. You can cancel at any time in your Apple ID subscription settings (or, if we make Scrolls available on Google Play, your Google Play subscription settings), at least 24 hours before the end of the current period. You keep access until the end of the period you have paid for.
5.5 Price changes. We will tell you at least 30 days before any price increase takes effect, and you can cancel before it applies.
5.6 A subscription lets you read included content while it is active. It does not give you ownership of any content.
6. Buying books
6.1 Where we offer individual titles for purchase, you can buy them at the price shown in the App, which includes any VAT or sales tax. Authors and publishers set their prices within our price range.
6.2 Bought titles are linked to your account and can be restored using "Restore Purchases".
6.3 When you buy a title, you get a personal, non-transferable licence to read it in the App. You do not own a copy of the book and must not copy or share it outside the App.
6.4 By completing a purchase, you ask us to give you access straight away and you acknowledge that you lose your 14-day right to cancel once the content is made available. This does not affect your rights if the content is faulty.
7. Payments and refunds
7.1 All in-app payments are processed by Apple (App Store), or by Google if we make Scrolls available on Google Play. We do not receive your full payment details. We use RevenueCat to confirm which purchases and subscriptions are active on your account.
7.2 Refund requests for in-app purchases must be made to Apple (at reportaproblem.apple.com), or to Google for any Google Play purchase, under their refund policies. If you are charged in error, contact Apple (or Google), and let us know so we can help.
7.3 Nothing in these Terms affects your statutory rights, including your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 if digital content is faulty or not as described.
8. Intellectual property
8.1 The App, Site, software, design and Scrolls branding belong to us or our licensors.
8.2 Books and other titles belong to their authors, publishers or other rights holders.
8.3 We give you a personal, non-exclusive, non-transferable licence to use the Services and read the content you have access to, for your own non-commercial use.
8.4 You must not copy, scrape, distribute, sell or modify the Services or any content, except as these Terms or the law allow.
8.5 If you send us feedback or ideas, we may use them without paying or crediting you.
9. XP, streaks and rewards
XP, streaks, badges and other rewards are for fun and motivation. They have no monetary value and cannot be sold, transferred or exchanged. We may change how they work, or reset rewards gained through cheating, bugs or breaking these Terms.
10. Rules for using Scrolls
You must not:
- break the law or these Terms;
- copy, screenshot, record or share book content outside the App, or try to get around copy protection;
- share your account or subscription, or sell or transfer your account;
- use bots, scripts or scrapers, or manipulate XP or streaks;
- harass, bully, threaten or abuse anyone, including our staff;
- contact, groom or ask for personal information from anyone under 18;
- post sexual, violent, hateful or otherwise harmful content, or spoilers without warning;
- post content you do not have the right to share;
- impersonate anyone, spam, or advertise;
- upload malware or try to access accounts or systems without permission; or
- make false reports about other users.
11. Book clubs and your content
11.1 Scrolls has social features such as book clubs, club posts, friends, friend requests, profiles and shared reading progress. Anything you post is "Your Content".
11.2 You keep ownership of Your Content. You give us a non-exclusive, worldwide, royalty-free licence to host, store, display and share it only to run and improve the Services. The licence ends when you delete Your Content or your account, except where others have already shared it or we must keep it by law.
11.3 You are responsible for Your Content and confirm you have the right to post it.
11.4 Club owners can remove posts and remove members from their clubs. We may step in where content or behaviour breaks these Terms.
12. Safety and reporting
12.1 You can report content, users or clubs using the in-App report tools or by emailing support@thefoundersgroup.co.uk. You can also block other users: this removes them as a friend, stops them sending you friend requests, and means neither of you sees the other's club posts. Blocking does not remove someone from a club; club owners can remove members from their clubs, and you can report a club.
12.2 Scrolls has zero tolerance for objectionable content or abusive users. Content that breaks these Terms will be removed, and users who post it or abuse others will have their access to community features suspended or their account closed.
12.3 We review reports and act on them within 24 hours: we remove content that breaks these Terms and suspend or close the accounts of users who posted it or behaved abusively. We take reports involving the safety of young people especially seriously.
12.4 If you think a child is in danger, contact the police first, then tell us.
13. Copyright complaints
13.1 If you believe content on Scrolls infringes your copyright, email copyright@thefoundersgroup.co.uk with: your contact details and signature; the work you own; where the infringing material is on Scrolls; a statement that you believe in good faith the use is not authorised; and a statement that your notice is accurate and you are the rights holder or authorised to act for them.
13.2 If your content is removed and you believe this was a mistake, you can send us a counter-notice explaining why.
13.3 We may close the accounts of users who repeatedly infringe copyright.
14. Third-party services and links
The Services use third-party services and content, including Apple and Google sign-in, Apple payments, dictionary definitions (including Wiktionary content under CC BY-SA) and poems. Some content is provided under open licences, with attribution in the App. We are not responsible for third-party websites or services, and linking to them does not mean we endorse them.
15. Changes to the Services
15.1 We may update, change or remove features to improve the Services, for legal or security reasons, or because our business changes.
15.2 If a change significantly reduces something you have already paid for, we will tell you in advance and refund the unused part of any prepaid amount.
15.3 We cannot promise the Services will always be available or error-free. We may suspend them for maintenance or events outside our control, and will try to keep disruption short.
16. Suspending or closing accounts
16.1 You can stop using Scrolls and delete your account at any time.
16.2 We may suspend or close your account if you seriously or repeatedly break these Terms, if the law requires it, or if your use puts others at risk. Where reasonable, we will tell you why first.
16.3 If we close your account for a reason other than your breach, we will give you reasonable notice where possible and refund any prepaid subscription for the unused period.
17. Our liability to you
17.1 Nothing in these Terms limits or excludes our liability for death or personal injury caused by our negligence, for fraud, or for anything else that cannot be limited by law, or affects your statutory rights.
17.2 We are not liable for losses that were not reasonably foreseeable, for business losses (the Services are for personal use), or for events outside our reasonable control.
17.3 Otherwise, our total liability to you is limited to the greater of £100 and the amount you paid us in the 12 months before the claim arose.
18. Changes to these Terms
We may update these Terms. We will tell you about important changes by email or in the App at least 14 days before they take effect. If you do not agree, you can cancel your subscription and delete your account before then. If you keep using Scrolls after that, the new Terms apply.
19. App store terms
19.1 These Terms are between you and us, not Apple or Google. We, not Apple or Google, are responsible for the App and its support.
19.2 If the App fails to meet any applicable warranty, you can tell Apple, which may refund the price of the App. To the extent the law allows, Apple has no other warranty obligation for the App.
19.3 You confirm you are not in a country under a US government embargo or on a US list of prohibited parties.
19.4 Apple and Google are third-party beneficiaries of this section and may enforce it against you.
19.5 For the iPhone app, Apple's standard Licensed Application End User License Agreement (https://www.apple.com/legal/internet-services/itunes/dev/stdeula/) also applies.
20. Complaints and disputes
20.1 If you have a complaint, email support@thefoundersgroup.co.uk. We aim to reply within 15 working days.
20.2 If we cannot resolve it, you can: bring a claim in the courts (in the UK, the small claims track covers claims up to £10,000); contact Citizens Advice for consumer issues; or complain to the Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk) about data protection.
21. Governing law
These Terms are governed by the law of England and Wales, and the courts of England and Wales have non-exclusive jurisdiction. If you live in Scotland or Northern Ireland, you can also bring proceedings there. If you live elsewhere, you keep any mandatory consumer protections of your country and may bring proceedings in its courts.
22. General
22.1 If any part of these Terms is found unenforceable, the rest still applies.
22.2 If we do not enforce a right straight away, we can still enforce it later.
22.3 We may transfer these Terms to another organisation, for example if our business is sold. We will tell you, and your rights will not be reduced. You may not transfer your rights without our consent.
22.4 Apart from Apple and Google under section 19, no one else can enforce these Terms.
