The vertical reader
Full-screen, distraction-free, and typeset in Merriweather at whatever size your eyes prefer. Tap any word for an instant definition.
"…he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters."
Scrolls is a reading app that serves real books the way your brain has been trained to want them — one chunk per swipe, endlessly upward. Same habit. Better input.
It is a truth universally acknowledged, that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife.
However little known the feelings or views of such a man may be on his first entering a neighbourhood…
…this truth is so well fixed in the minds of the surrounding families, that he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters.
“My dear Mr. Bennet,” said his lady to him one day, “have you heard that Netherfield Park is let at last?”
No reading plan, no 30-minute commitment. Scrolls lets you read books on your phone in short swipes, meeting the habit exactly where it already is.
Search the catalogue, or pick up whatever you left open.
The text is cleaned and split into short, readable chunks — one chunk per screen.
Every swipe advances the story and banks 10 XP. Your place syncs to the cloud instantly.
Ten idle minutes turns into a chapter. Finish a book and unlock 200 XP plus a badge.
A reading app where every screen is one thumb wide. Nothing asks you to sit at a desk.

"…he is considered as the rightful property of some one or other of their daughters."
The same dopamine loop your feed uses, pointed at literature. Ten XP a swipe, 200 for a finished book, and a streak that quietly guilts you into chapter two.
Your shelf, your place, and your bookmarks sync across every device. Close the app mid-sentence on the bus; open it mid-sentence on the couch.
Home greets you with one short poem a week — a thirty-second read for the days a whole chapter feels like too much.
Scrolls doubles as a book club app: start a club, invite friends, and watch everyone's progress bar crawl across the same book. It's peer pressure, but the good kind.
New titles go up as we add them ourselves and as publishers come on board.
Browse and search the catalogue by title, author, or whatever half-remembered phrase you've got.
Save anything to your library. Progress and bookmarks ride along, on every device you sign into.
Books cache locally after the first open, so the tunnel, the plane, and the dead-zone all still count.
Scrolls is a reading app for your phone. It splits real books into short chunks you swipe through vertically, one chunk per screen, so the habit of scrolling a feed turns into reading a book.
Pick a book and Scrolls shows it one short chunk at a time. Swipe up for the next chunk, the way you would move through a feed. Each chunk read earns 10 XP, finishing a book earns 200 XP and a badge, and your place syncs so you can pick up on any device.
No. Scrolls shows the full text of the book, split into short chunks. Nothing is summarised, shortened or rewritten, so you read the book the author wrote.
Kindle and Apple Books show a book as pages, or as one long column if you turn on their scrolling modes. Scrolls splits the book into short chunks and shows one per screen, so each swipe moves you one chunk on, with reading streaks, XP and book clubs built in. It is designed for the spare minutes you would otherwise spend on a social feed. See the full comparison.
Each book shows how you can read it: free, as part of the Scrolls Library subscription, as a one-off purchase, or either. Scrolls Library costs £3.99 a month in the UK (prices vary by country), and new subscribers may be offered a 2-week free trial. Book clubs and other social features do not need a subscription.
Scrolls is coming soon, starting with iPhone; an Android version is planned. Join the newsletter at the bottom of this page and we will email you when it launches.
We are building the catalogue one book at a time, adding titles ourselves and as publishers come on board. You can search it by title, author or a half-remembered phrase.
Yes. Start a book club, invite friends and see everyone's progress through the same book. Discussion unlocks by position, so nobody spoils the ending.
Yes. Books are saved on your device after you first open them, so you can keep reading on a plane, in a tunnel or anywhere without signal.
No. Scrolls does not show advertising, does not use your data for targeted ads and does not sell your data. The books we feature are chosen by us, and no one pays for them to appear.
Scrolls stores your account and reading progress so your place syncs across devices, and you can delete your account at any time. The privacy policy explains what we collect and why, in plain English. Read the privacy policy.
